6 Things That Cause Fluid Retention in Your Body and How to Avoid Them!
Water retention, also called fluid retention or edema is an abnormal accumulation of water in the tissues or cavities of the organism. The retention of fluids in the organism causes swellings in the legs, feet, ankles and hands.

The most common causes of fluid retention are:
-Consuming too much sodium
Sodium is a compound that is contained in numerous food products sold in the markets, including processe meats, some canned foods, fast foot etc. Before you buy some product, it is highly advisable to read the label and check the level of sodium. Experts explain that excessive intake of sodium and not drinking enough water leads to retention of fluids.
-Processed foods
Processe foods are abundant with sodium and sugar, and these white substances are considere to the main causes of fluid retention.
-Dehydration
In order to stay properly hydrated, adult person should drink at least 8 glasses of water per a day. In case if you are not drinking enough water during the day you may dehydrate. It is important to highlight that dehydration will make your organism to retain water in order to survive and that eventually will cause swelling.
-Vitamin B6 deficiency
Scientific studies showed that vitamin B6 deficiency causes fluid retention and in order to prevent that, it is highly advisable to optimize its levels.
Foods abundant with vitamin B6 are tuna, sunflower seeds, potatoes, pistachios, bananas and chicken.
-Magnesium deficiency
Doctors explain that magnesium is one of the most important minerals for the overall health because if plays important part in many body functions. Scientists estimated that adults should take at least 200 mg. of magnesium on a daily basis. Medical experts explain that by taking the optimal amount of magnesium you also will prevent fluid retention.
Foods abundant with magnesium are: nuts, dried fruits, avocado, whole grains and spinach.
-Potassium deficiency
Potassium deficiency is another cause for fluid imbalance. Namely, this mineral is responsible for regulation of water in the organism. That actually is the reason why lack of potassium might lead to water retention.
-How to prevent fluid retention:
Physical activity – by exercising on a regular basis you will activate your body and thus you will improve circulation in your legs. Exercising will compress your muscles in the veins thus the excess fluid in the organism will be eliminate through sweat and urine.
Elevate the legs while you are resting – this simple trick will reduce the swelling in the ankles. All you should do is to lie down and put your ankles above the knees at a sharp angle and thus improve the movement of fluids.
Eat more fruits and veggies – these foods contain flavonoids, which have important role in removing the excess water from the organism.
Don’t wear tight clothes – experts explain that tight clothing will impair the circulation in your organism.
